Algebra

Algebra is possibly the most abstract part of mathematics. Algebra tries to translate the real world to the mathematics world. In algebra you are going to find numbers and letters related by the operations you already know.

First of all, you should learn to translate some expressions to maths, and what's even more difficult, you should do it in english! Watch te following video to learn how and after answer the questions below:

o   Copy the chart you can find in the minute 1.25 in your notebook.
o   In wich minute did the woman say “ pay close attention”? What does it meant?
o   How can you said in english:
o   Un número aumentado 5 unidades
o   El doble de un numero disminuido en cuatro unidades
o   Siete dividido por un numero
o   Un número menos cinco
o   Dos menos un número(in a different way)
o   El doble de un numero menos cuatro
o   How can you translate = into words?

Now, in the next video, you can learn how to calculate the numerical value of an algebraic expression.  Watch it and answer the questions below.
What’s a monomial?  In this video you can learn what a monomial is, and what it isnt.

o   Explain when  algebraic expression is a monomial.
o Give five examples of monomials and five more algebraic expressions that are not monomials.

EQUATIONS

Equations are going to be very important in your life.  You are going to study them for years. So, the better you learn it now, the less problems you will have in the future.  Let's start with the next video.

o   How do you solve this equation? x+3=4
o   How do you solve this equation? 2x+3=5
o   How do you solve this equation? 5x+3=4x-2
o   How do you solve this equation? 2(x+3)-4=4-3(x-2)+5
